The Apple of the Eye

We see it every day when we look into someone’s eyes, yet we never think twice about where it came from. Honestly, how many words do we use every day and never consider what the words actually mean? It is incredible. I happen to have a fascination with the human eye. I think it is the most incredible part of God’s creation. But that is for another time. For now, let me introduce you to one, simple part: the pupil.

The pupil is the black center of your eye with which light shines through in order to reach the light receptors at the back of the eye. Without it – and the rest of the complex structure of the eye – we would not be able to see. The word pupil comes from the Latin pupilla meaning “little girl-doll” and pupa meaning “girl or doll”. This meaning comes from the reflection seen in the eye. If you think about it, if you were to look into another’s eyes, you would see a mirror image of yourself. Yet that image would be very small, like a child. Thus it only makes sense to call that a “little girl” or “child”. In the Greek, the word was kore which meant “girl” but was also used to identify a “doll” or the “middle of the eye”. In the 1300’s, it was brought into the English language from the Latin to mean “the center of the eye”. The French word at this time was spelled pupille. The late 1300’s definition was a ‘”student” or an “orphan child or ward that one was responsible for”. As of the 1500’s, it was also used to nickname a baby. In the 1600’s, it could be used to mean “to look lovingly into someone’s eyes”. Thus pupil gained usage for  a student, the center of the eye, an orphan or child that one looks after, as well as looking into a lover’s eyes. The most common use today is, however, describing the center of the eye. Like I mentioned before, this is a vital part of the eye. As you might know, there is a common term to refer to the pupil: the apple of the eye. The Bible is the first place where this phrase is used. Interestingly enough, the term “apple of my eye” in the Hebrew does relate to the Greek and Latin words meaning “little person”. Solomon instructs the reader to keep these commands “as the apple of your eye”, meaning to keep the close and protect them. In the Psalms, David asks God to keep and protect him “As the apple of Your eye”. And later in Zechariah, God calls His children the apple of His eye. This means that He cares for us with special care. We are His ward, we need to be protected, we are His children. We keep His commands safe, and He keeps us safe as if we are the apple of His eye.

Ever thought the word pupil could mean so much? You have to admit, it is pretty special. Now I know that you’ll never look into your or someone else’s eyes the same way again. When you think about it, each of us are little “reflections” of God, as we are made in His image. We are little students learning how to walk in the right ways. We are orphans looking for a loving Father to care for us. We are the apple of His eye, and the most incredible part of His creation (yes, even more than the eye itself…). When God looks at us, all He sees is love and compassion. Remember that the next time you look at someone, or yourself. And remember the incredible etymology of the word pupil. I mean it. Random bits of trivia, as my brother calls it, can be very useful.

I know I divulged a bit from the etymology. I just love how all of creation reflects God. Etymology never ceases to amaze me, and I hope it is interesting to you as well.

Blessings,

As with anything I discuss concerning etymology, these words and snippets of definitions came from the Oxford English dictionary. However, all is my own work.

Everyday Miracles

I talk with many people about God and science a lot. But I have noticed something about people who take things from a purely secular standpoint and even some Christians: they do not see miracles. Well, they may see them, but they do not see them for what they are nor do they see their importance.

For example, I was talking with my parents about Dr. Ben Carson this evening and the gift that he has been given with neurosurgery. It is seriously an incredible the work that he has done involving neuroscience, especially with the separating of conjoined twins. The patience, the skill, the eye-hand coordination, and the knowledge and wisdom to perform such a task is immense. In fact, the very thought of it seems incomprehensible to me. For in all seriousness, once your neurons are gone in your brain, they are gone forever. There is no getting them back. Once slip on the scalpel and there are some serious consequences. Going back to Ben Carson, he has been given an amazing gift. He knows the amazingness of science, yet he sees the awesomeness of God through it all.

He sees the miracle of his gift.

This encourages me greatly, yet, it also makes me sad to think of the people who do not see this miracle.

This is why I bring this up: there are miracles that happen all around us every day, yet we do not even take time to notice them.

Life in itself is a miracle, yet we see it so much that we take it for granted. Some people even take it away because they do not deem it worthy to live, and yet the very fact that it is there is a miracle!

When did people stop believing in miracles? Why do people go to the extent of saying “It was a coincidence.” Or perhaps “It just happened, we cannot really explain it.” Or my favorite (sarcasm) “Science did it.”

I love science, but without the hand of God, you cannot even get the foundations of this world right.

The very fact that our solar system is in the perfect place in our galaxy is incredible, and you mean to tell me that it just happened?

The fact that we have the structures in place protecting us every moment like a magnetic field and ozone layer is awe-inspiring, and you mean to tell me that it formed slowly over time?

The fact that life is as abundant as it is on this earth is praiseworthy for God’s creativity, and you mean to tell me that it was formed by death?

The fact that two cells can come together, and have all the needed information to form a new human life, is indescribable, and you mean to tell me that it has no purpose?

The miracles that take place everyday are stupendous, yet we have treated them as if they are norm. It reminds me of a quote I heard a while back:

Men go abroad to wonder at the heights of mountains, at the huge waves of the sea, at the long courses of the rivers, at the vast compass of the ocean, at the circular motions of the stars, and they pass by themselves without wondering.” ~ Augustine

How many times do we pass by ourselves without wondering?

I did a study on the human body one year. The cells, the muscles, the brain and so forth…all of it. And it astounded me. Literally, I was blown away. I have been a science geek for years, and I could not even fathom all of the perfection and design God has placed into just the human body – and we have barely scratched the surface!

However, my favorite part was the eye. Every part of it shouts the name of Creator. Nothing, in my opinion, is superior to the eye. It has the protection, the magnification, the depth, the material, and the function that is unreplicable. Something I found most incredible is that it is attached directly to the brain. It is literally one with the brain; a bundle of nerves that allows us to see. Because of this attachment, we get the perfect vision that we do and have the memory that we possess.

Here is another fun fact: we only see visible radiation. Sounds obvious, right? Well, there are many types of radiation, especially that comes from our sun.  However, God made sure that our eyes were properly formed to be able to see that visible radiation AND be sure that the sun produced mostly visible radiation! What if our eyes could not receive visible radiation (hypothetically speaking)? What if the sun did not emit enough or any visible radiation? Yet, neither of these things happened because God took care of it all.

Does it get more incredible than that?

I like to look at God’s perfection this way: He has placed His fingerprint on everything He has made to show that it was designed by Him. When I see the design of God, when that is revealed to me, I believe that I am seeing His fingerprints.

And those fingerprints are on each of us.

These are the kind of miracles that we pass by every day. These are not coincidences, not formed by chance accidents, not created by science and man. This is obvious design by God that cannot be overlooked.

Science cannot explain this, but God’s handiwork can.

“I praise thee for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvelous are thy works, and that my soul knoweth right well.” ~ Psalm 139 :14 ~

When I consider the heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars. Which thou hast ordained; what is man, that thou art mindful of him? And the son of man, that thou visitest him? ~ Psalm 8:3-4 ~

Becuase out of all of this, all of this creation,  He considers us worthy of His love. And that is truely a miracle indeed.
